Undercover by Jun Takashi S/S 2006,
This piece was originally a tee from Undercover’s SS06 ‘T’ collection’.
“It was reborn as a completely new design by slightly adding cuts to the shirt and adjusting its shape. It is an act of genius.” However, there is much more to this piece than the technical details alone.
The collection stems from Jun’s idea of creating five fictional bands, CHUUUT being one. Many pieces incorporated the bands’ graphics and were reminiscent of band merch on a whole new level: the pieces were tastefully reconstructed, with a large number of them constructed out of tees (hence the collection title). This use of reconstruction can be argued as paying homage to the work of Margiela, and this is only further solidified through the piece Martin Margiela himself altered for Jun’s feature in ‘A Magazine Curated By'.
As for the ‘CHUUUT!’ graphic, several references were made to create the design. Chuut is an informal way of saying shut up in french which I like. The woman featured is Susan Strasberg from 1961 horror film ‘Scream of Fear!’. The font is Shatter created by artist Vic Carless in 1973, and has been used for countless media including the Dracula 1973 movie poster and ACDC’s Powerage album cover art. The ‘CHUUUT!’ graphic was also used for Undercover’s SS06 vinyl records ‘created’ by the five fictional bands.
