John Galliano’s work has often embraced bold, provocative, even controversial symbols. The “Pirate” jacket is a known Galliano design with torn flag references repurposed in a dramatic costume-fashion-punk style. He has consistently used emblems that provoke as much as they adorn.

In 2011, Galliano was filmed making antisemitic and racist remarks in a Paris bar. The public shock led to his dismissal from Dior and a broader debate about whether a visionary artist can or should be separated from his public behavior.
